The only putters that are for sale are 33' putters. Would it change the putter(besides the length) if I got it cut down to 31'?

Would it change:
Feel
Stroke

Would it change the weight so much that it would seem like a whole new putter?

YES, it will change the feel, which may impact your stroke.

Shortening a putter (ESPECIALLY by 2 inches) would decrease the swing-weight of the putter, therefore making it feel lighter.

You would be taking approximately 20 grams off of the putter, so compensate you would either need to put 20 grams of lead tape on the putter, or put 20 grams worth of tungsten powder down the shaft.

I would recommend cutting off .5/1 inch at a time to see what you like best, and see how the weight works for you. But some people do like the lighter weight head and some like a heavier head.

When you cut it down, at first it will seem like you are missing everything, so give it a little time, don't jump to conclusions without a little time with it.

Good luck.

I want to get him a new putter for Christmas. He is 6'1" with long legs. He is very good. Not quite professional, but still really good. So does any one have suggestions? Any good or bad experiences with your putter?

Do NOT get him a putter. A putter is a very personal club, and he may be afraid or at least unwilling to offend you by taking it back for one that fits him better. Many things are taken into account when getting a new putter. The length, and the lie, the feel, don't spoil it for him, let him get his own. Best thing you can do, is to get him a gift cert to a golf shop for a putter and let him pick it out.

MDC Putter Component Head

MDC Putter Component Head

Scotty Cameron Newport Clone Golf Clubs, The MDC putter offers a classic design that is perfect for golfers of all levels. The low loft produces a putt which rolls off the putter face with less hopping, thus allowing your putt to roll smoother towards the hole with added speed. The heel and toe weighting and slight offset helps golfers to align putts along the right line, and the Perimeter weighting makes the MDC an extremely forgiving putter. The classic profile makes this putter very easy to look at, thus allowing the golfer to make every putt for rounds to come.

I've upgraded my golf clubs with the exception of the putter. I'm not sure what to look for. There is just so many choices out there. Anyone have suggestions on what you should look for when buying a putter? Is it just whichever feels the best to you when you hit it or what?

I prefer a long face … the longer face width is more obvious when aligning or "aiming" the putter to the direction you intend to start the putt.

My second criteria is back weighting … which makes a smooth stroke that continues through the ball easier.

"Yip's" are usually the result of a jerky motion during putting. Something we all try to avoid all the time!!

Putters are the only club that are not "regulated" … thus, you have almost unlimited styles to pick from.

Good Luck!!!
